Many applications, such as cryptography and remote authentication, require high quality random number streams at high speed. Available pseudo-random generators can only provide numbers that appears to be random, but are instead truly deterministic. Only generators based on real random physical processes, among which the quantum mechanics, can guarantee that the generated streams are really random and thus make possible the design of unbreakable code.
The new Quantum Random Number (QRN) generator is based on the intrinsic statistical behaviour of a quantum detector ignited by electron-hole pair generated within a semiconductor, following a Poisson distribution. Such triggering is then used to extract random numbers by means of our patent pending method.
The QRN achieves a maximum bit rate as high as 128Mbps, with a stream that is already unbiased and ready to be used with no other whitening process. Random bits are delivered either on-demand through coaxial output and trigger input or digitally through USB 2.0 connection.
The resulting stream easily passes all tests included in the NIST Statistical Test Suite.
The USB compact module is Plug&Play and easy to use, drawing its supply from the USB bus and producing a continuous stream of high quality random numbers @ 16, 32, 64 or 128Mbps.
DLLs are available for easy integration of the QRN in customer’s experimental setup or for adjusting module parameters according to user needs.
